Having a new baby can be really hard work. Bellyful cooks and delivers meals to families with newborn babies and families with young children who are struggling with illness, where there is otherwise little support.
Families can be referred to Bellyful by Plunket nurses, midwives, friends, maternal mental health services and more – however it’s important to know that you can refer yourself. This is how it works.
Bellyful’s criteria is generally having a baby under 3 months old but that is not set in stone. They also support families who have young children and where a family member is seriously ill.
Be rest assured there is no financial assessment component involved – their service is available to all and is based on an emotional need for support not a financial one. Each family receives at least three dinner-time meals (spaghetti bolognese, macaroni cheese and lasagna).
The easiest way to refer a family is to via the Bellyful website - there is a North Shore branch. Families do need to know that they are being referred (i.e. you need their permission) and families also have the right to decline the service if they feel they do not need it.
Bellyful don’t want to take over from all of the other wonderful forms of support available to families (like support from family, friends, church, Play Centre, other family groups and networks) – they step in where none of those exist.
